The Tharu people
The Tharu people are the original settlers of Bardia, coexisting with the wild animals in total isolation until 1895. To visit the Tharu village is a step back in time to a way of life hundreds of years old. We also offer traditional Tharu dancing on request. Elephant bathing: Domesticated elephants will come on request to the river to share a bath with you (amazing pictures garanted). Elephant stable visit: This is where all domesticated elephants spend the night. Babies are often seen there. Bardia National Park headquarter visit: You will discover a small Tharu museum, an infomation center and a crocodile breeding farm.
When visiting the village (the temple area, the bazar and the national park visitor center), you will enter a typical Tharu house. They are long buildings where big families live and gather incomes and work for the common wellbeing. You will get an insight of local crafts and customs from this mysterious but fascinating ethnical group.
